Dr. Shannon Lucid


  • Part of NASA’s first group of women astronauts, Dr. Shannon Lucid has spent a lot of time in space, over 5,300 hours or over 220 days, in fact, across five different space flights.
  • Served as a Mission Specialist on four space flights: STS-51G, STS-34, STS-43, and STS-58. In addition, she served as a Board Engineer 2 aboard the Russian Space Station Mir for an 188-day mission. With a B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. and PhD in Biochemistry, Lucid conducted several experiments aboard Mir, including growing wheat, testing how microgravity affects crystallization and solidification, and testing how flames and candles burned in space. 
  • First woman to hold an international record for most orbital flight hours by any non-Russian, and until June 2007, also held the record for most orbital flight hours by any woman.
  • From February 2002 to September 2003, Dr. Lucid served as NASA’s Chief Scientist, stationed at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where she worked to develop and communicate NASA’s research and scientific goals to the world.
  • Worked a variety of technical assignments in the Astronaut Office and worked as a CAPCOM in the Mission Control Center for several Space Shuttle and International Space Station missions.
