Col. Frederick Gregory


  • Served as a decorated U.S. Air Force pilot, logging over 7,000 hours in more than 50 types of aircraft, including combat missions in Vietnam.
  • Became an astronaut in 1978
  • In 1989, became the first African American to command a space shuttle mission, leading STS-33 aboard Discovery.
  • Served as Deputy Administrator of NASA from 2002 to 2005.
