General Lloyd “Fig” Newton

• Trailblazing U.S. Air Force aviator who became the first African American pilot in the Air Force Thunderbirds precision flying team in 1974, breaking racial barriers and inspiring future generations.
• Combat veteran of the Vietnam War, flying more than 300 combat missions and earning distinguished honors including the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross.
• Served as Commander of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), where he modernized pilot training programs and strengthened aviation education across the Air Force.
• A lifelong advocate for diversity and inclusion, championing opportunities for underrepresented groups in aviation and helping shape a more inclusive workforce.
• Continued to advance aviation following his military retirement through leadership in the private sector and aviation organizations, earning induction into the U.S. Air Force Academy Athletics Hall of Fame and the Tuskegee Airmen National Convention Hall of Fame.
• Revered as a mentor and role model, General Newton’s legacy continues to inspire countless aviators and leaders in both military and civilian aviation.
