Joe Sutter


  • Earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Washington in 1943.
  • Joined Boeing in 1945 and spent his entire career at the company, eventually becoming the Vice President and General Manager of the 747 program.
  • Known as the “Father of the 747,” he served as the chief engineer for the development of the Boeing 747, the world’s first wide-body airliner.
  • Four-decade career at The Boeing Company, whose technical leadership and management skills were instrumental in the development of three generations of advanced transports, which contributed significantly to the US preeminence in civil aeronautics.
