Warren G. Grimes


  • Produced lights for the Ford Tri-Motor “Tin Goose.”
  • Patented the electric-powered retractable landing light in 1936, created wing-tip navigation lights, and designed countless other interior and exterior aircraft lighting.
  • Earned the coveted Army-Navy “E” Award for production excellence – an award given to less than 5 percent of plants involved in war work during WWII.
  • Served two terms as mayor of Urbana, Ohio and chairman of the State Aviation Board.
  • His legacy persists and lighting he invented can be found in aircraft such as the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and the Boeing 777 airliner
  • Named the “Father of Aircraft Lighting.”
