Fifty years ago, on August 16, 1960, Joe Kittinger jumped out of a helium balloon from a record altitude of 102,800 feet and did a free-fall back toward Earth. The record still stands, as does the one he set for fastest speed (614 mph) by a human being through the atmosphere. He was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1997.
